I saw this article on Sphinn- Google, “you can put 50 words in your title-tag, we’ll read it“. It is a great article with valuable information.
I have used longer title-tags for a long time, but you also have to be careful because you do not want to get nailed for meta-tag stuffing. Here is some info I think you should know about title-tags:
-
You have 96 characters of visual space in your title-tag– have you ever seen title-tags that have words cut off? Well you have 96 characters to make it really pretty. So let’s say you have 91 characters in the tag you create, you can add 5 spaces and then add a few more words. It makes the title-tag look cleaner to the web visitor, but you still get the added bonus of additional words for optimization.
-
Your title-tag should not focus on too many keywords/keyword phrases- you should focus on 3 or 4 at the most. If you look above at mine (for this page) you will see that I focused on three main words- SEO, Sarasota and Title-tag. I could have put “SEO Sarasota” past the 96 characters and it wouldn’t have looked so repetitive. I could do just about anything with the space, but too many words could hurt you. You cannot repeat the same word over and over and you cannot fill this tag with tons of words.
-
Your title-tag is the first thing search engines look at- make it count! Choose the right words.
-
You need a different title-tag for every page. Each title-tag should include keywords/keyword phrases from that particular page.
-
Your company name does not have to be on the title-tag of every page. Use it on the home page, contact and about but you can use the extra space for keywords on other pages.
-
Your title-tag is going to be the first thing people see in the SERPs- you want it clean and you want it to clearly show your keywords. Google will display 66 characters of your title-tag- keep this in mind when deciding which keywords are the most important.
-
You don’t have to use all of your space. W3C prefers 64 characters or less, but W3C is not Google.
-
The keywords you place in the title-tag should be in your copy and Use them in headlines when possible, in alt-tags and anchor text.
