SEO’s Actually Owe Potential Clients More Time than Some Other Industries…
Most people look at me like I am speaking a foreign language when I say Search Engine Optimization. They have no clue what it is and they are shocked that it is actually a job. It is for this reason that I spend a good amount of time with potential clients explaining what Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is and why it will benefit their business.
If you needed open heart surgery you would expect the surgeon to explain it, right? Well, SEO’s are asking potential clients and/or struggling businesses to spend money for Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing services. Those potential clients deserve a COMPLETE explanation of services and they should hear why SEO works, how it will work for them and some quick strategies that will work for them. Are you giving some information away for free? Yes. Will it hurt you? No, because you are establishing trust and if you cannot establish trust you will not be able to sell your services to a potential client. Additionally, most do not want to do our job themselves and/or they don’t have time for it.
So How Do I Bring in More Business?
Read the above paragraphs again and also do the following:
- Do Your Job to the Best of Your Ability For EVERY Client!
- Take Nothing for Granted!
- Treat Every Client with COMPLETE Respect!!!
- Make Your Client’s Internet Marketing Success a Personal Priority!!
- Do Not Take On More Clients Than You Can Handle or Your Other Clients Suffer and You Destroy Your Reputation
- Help Your Clients Gain More For Less
- Be Ethical in Every Thing You Do!!!
- Be Personable and Be Humble, But Be an Authority
These Are All Common Sense Ideas!
Yes they are, but if you combine them with the first two paragraphs you will not need to look for work again. You establish a basic trust and then you create more and then you provide outstanding work and you remain ethical (lots of ands, I know).
You won’t need to look for work because the work will come to you! One person will recommend you to another and then another. That person will recommend you to another and then it snowballs and you will end up putting people on a list. More importantly, you can look yourself in the mirror because you remained ethical, you provided a great service and you helped your client.
The Good and the Bad
There are many people out there offering SEO services, but they have no idea what SEO really is. This means that you are going to have to work harder to prove that you know your stuff. Then after you prove that you have the knowledge you have to prove that you are trustworthy. So, give a little and even if you are an SEO genius be humble. No one likes a jerk.
I know that SEO’s are getting slammed lately, but there are always good and bad in every industry. It would be nice if we could prove that there are good people out there who enjoy watching our clients do better. Do you know how thrilled I am when clients call to tell me they had to hire additional staff to help with increased workload? Completely bonkers doesn’t cover it!
I think some people have forgotten that being a good person that cares about others is really important to the success of a business. Not everyone, just some.
